In this biographical film, glamorous but lonely celebrity Joan Crawford takes in two orphans, and at first their unconventional household seems happy. But after Joan's makes an attempt at romantic fulfillment go bitter and she is fired from her agreement with MGM studios, her callous and abusive behavior towards her daughter Christina turns into even more pronounced. Christina leaves home and takes her first performing role, solely to find her mother's presence nonetheless overshadowing her.
