A father and his son stroll alone via burned America. Nothing movements in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind and water. It is cold sufficient to crack stones, and, while the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the hotter south, though they don't realize what, if anything, awaits them there.
