By 2017, the international financial system has collapsed and American society has become a totalitarian police state, censoring all cultural activity. The government pacifies the population through broadcasting a number of sport presentations in which convicted criminals battle for their lives, together with the gladiator-style The Running Man, hosted through the ruthless Damon Killian, the place “runners” try to avoid “stalkers” and positive death for a chance to be pardoned and set free.
