In the wintry weather of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by means of something no one might believe: a whale of gigantic measurement and will, and an almost human feel of vengeance. The real-life maritime crisis might encourage Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.  But that instructed solely part the story.  “Heart of the Sea” finds the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving group is driven to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to keep alive.  Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into query their private beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for route on the open sea and his first mate nonetheless seeks to bring the nice whale down.
