On a far flung patch of the Mojave Desert, amidst dusty tumbleweeds and rangy Joshua Trees, sits an anomaly: a high faculty where educators think empathy, existence skills, and the fidelity of a caring grownup are the variations that will supply at-risk students command of their fates. On any given day, primary Vonda Viland calls youngsters at the crack of dawn to see if they’ll make it to school. And if they want a ride? Well, she’ll choose them up. Vonda knows each student’s demanding situations and coaches them tirelessly, never fostering fake hopes. Her philosophy combines loving compassion with realism, and given her school’s emerging commencement rate, it seems to be working.
