Emily Walters is an American widow dwelling a peaceful, uneventful existence in the idyllic Hampstead Village of London, whilst she meets a local recluse, Donald Horner. For 17 years, Donald has lived—wildly but peacefully—in a ramshackle hut close to the side of the forest. When Emily learns his house is the goal of developers who will forestall at not anything to take away him, saving Donald and his belongings turns into her private mission. Despite his gruff exterior and well mannered refusals for help, Emily is drawn to him—as he is to her—and what begins as a charitable motive evolves into a relationship that will develop even as the bulldozers shut in.
